Commom Causes Of Hyperparathyroidism

The body consists of four parathyroid glands which release the parathyroid hormone. These glands are located in the neck behind the thyroid gland. The hormone released by the parathyroid glands helps in maintaining the phosphate and calcium levels in the body. When there is a drop in the calcium levels in the body, the glands release the parathyroid hormone to increase the calcium levels. However, the release of parathyroid hormone in excess gives rise to a condition called as hyperparathyroidism. This condition can be treated by means of a minimally invasive parathyroid surgery.

What Causes Hyperparathyroidism?

Primary hyperparathyroidism: This disorder occurs due to parathyroid gland problems, which may be genetic or unpredictable in nature. The problem in the parathyroid glands is due to the development of non-cancerous tumor in the gland in many cases. In other cases it is seen to occur due to enlargement of the parathyroid glands. Only under rare circumstances does a cancerous tumor lead to this condition.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism: This disorder occurs when there is a fall in the body calcium levels, as the parathyroid glands work overtime to make up for the discrepancy in calcium levels in such cases. This can occur if the individual has a severe form of vitamin D or calcium deficiencies, or chronic kidney failure. While a deficiency of vitamin D affects the ability of the digestive system to absorb calcium, a kidney failure may prevent the conversion of the vitamin D in the body into the required form, thereby leading to a calcium deficiency, and in turn secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Tertiary hyperparathyroidism: This condition occurs when secondary hyperparathyroidism has been present for a long period of time. Due to this, even if secondary hyperparathyroidism condition is treated and the calcium levels are brought to the optimal levels, the parathyroid glands continue producing the parathyroid hormone in excess. The glands no longer take the calcium levels in the body to produce the hormone and function autonomously, resulting in high calcium levels.
